Kidepo Vally National Park
The Park is located in the northern part of Uganda on the border with Sudan. It covers an area of 1442 sq. km; lying in the rugged semi-arid valleys of the Karamoja province. The Kidepo Valley National Park is one of Uganda's most spectacular parks.It harbors scenery unsurpassed by any other park in East Africa as well as great number of flora and fauna as open tree savannah which varies much in structure and composition.
Mountain forest areas along the Lorupei river which supports dense acacia generadi forests.
Major Tourism Activities
Game drives:
It has 80 mammalian species with about 28 of them found no elsewhere in other Uganda parks. These include Elephants, Zebras, Buffaloes, Bohar reedbucks, waterbucks and Kongoni, Spotted hyenas, Leopards and Lions, Oribi, Guenthers Dik Dik, Senegal galagos, Side striped Jackals among others.
Bird watching;
These include silver birds, yellow billed Shrinker, Vihaceous doves, Hoopoes, Nubian Wood peckers, Mosque swallows starting scarlet-Chested sunbird, Little weaves, red Cheeked Cordon. BlueCouncal, African Mustached and brad tailed warbler, Marsh Tchara among others. The park has 465 species of bird recorded. Hiking and scenery viewing;
This can be carried out on Lamoj mountain just a few km from the park headquarters.
Cultural performance;
The local community near the park stage cultural dances and performances for example Emuya of the Nyangira, Lara karaka and Apiti dances of the Acholi are worth to see and participate into.
ACCOMMODATION
Apoka Rest Camp, run by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, offers comfortable bandas within the national park, including bedding, mosquito netting and showers.
It is recommended that you bring all your own food although it can be cooked for you if necessary.
A more upmarket option is the exclusive Apoka Lodge. This luxury lodge is located in the middle of Kidepo National Park with spacious rooms and private veranda.
Each room has a sitting room and ensuite bathroom. A restaurant and swimming pool are available as well. It is recommended that a ranger-guide accompany you at all times whilst at Kidepo Valley National park and this can be arranged on arrival at Apoka
. Park officials also suggest that all vehicles travelling north into the Kidepo Valley be escorted by multiple armed guards due to the periodic presence of poachers and cattle rustlers in the area.
ACCESS
The best way of reaching this park is by using a charter flight.
However, ground transportation is from Kampala-Lira-Kotido-Kabong-Kidepo; covering a distance of 705km
